MS IN NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP
MS in Education
The Graduate School of Education and the School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2) offer two dual degree options for students interested in positively affecting society through a dual perspective: educational influences and nonprofit endeavors.
Application Information
Students apply to the NPL and MSEd in Education, Culture & Society program or MSEd in International Educational Development program simultaneously, fulfilling the application requirements for each degree program and indicating an interest in the NPL/MSEd. Upon acceptance into NPL and ECS or NPL and IEDP, the applicant will be admitted to the dual degree program. Students may use the same letters of recommendation provided the referees address the dual degree interests.
Course of Study
SP2 and GSE are coming together to offer two dual degrees:
- The Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership and the Master of Science in Education in Education, Culture, and Society, a 1.5 year, 14 CU program.
- The Master of Science in Nonprofit Leadership and the Master of Science in Education in International Educational Development a 1.5 year, 14 CU program.
SP2 and GSE will each reduce required CUs by three to allow for students to take 14 CUs for each dual instead of the normal 20 CUs if the degrees were earned separately.
Generally, students will be housed in GSE in year one and SP2 in year two.

Practicum
Master of Science in Education in Education, Culture, and Society
Starting in the spring semester of the first year of the dual program, the student will complete the Nonprofit Leadership Practicum. NPL/MES students are not required to participate in the summer practicum events. Please consult your NPL and MES Academic Advisors prior to the spring semester.The Leadership Practicum is an integral part of the experiential learning for all NPL students, which builds upon core competencies and principles of leadership developed in the classroom. It consists of:
- a supervised mentoring and leadership development experience with either an executive director or senior level leader at local, national, or international social impact organization;
- a partnership with the goal of understanding the organization and providing student support on various levels that can include strategic planning, succession planning, branding or marketing, development and philanthropy, or other targeted projects; and
- a commitment of a minimum of 125 hours of practicum time with the sponsoring organization (virtually, hybrid, or fully in-person) during the spring or summer semester. NPL/MES students who would like to follow the traditional practicum timeline, may choose to participate in their fall semester.
Master of Science in Education in International Educational Development
The IEDP international internship meets the requirements of the NPL Leadership Practicum. It provides a real-world para-professional experience that blends theory with practice, with UN agencies such as UNESCO and UNICEF, and major NGOs, such as Room to Read and the Agha Khan Foundation. Unlike other international education programs, we work individually with all of our students to place them in a position and provide a significant Penn-funded stipend to facilitate most travel costs. In addition, several courses employ real world simulations. NPL/IEDP dual degree students will typically complete their IEDP internship in the summer following their first year. NPL/IEDP dual degree students are not required to participate in the summer practicum events. Please consult your NPL and IEDP Academic Advisors for further guidance.
