Certificate in Law Program

Students need a total of four courses towards the certificate; three of them may be completed within the credits required for the MSW, MSSP or NPL degrees. Two courses include:

• LAW 5110 (Fulfills an Elective Course)
• LAW xxxx (Fulfills an Elective Course)

For the third course, each Master’s program has a different option

• Master of Social Work students may use SWRK 7xxx: TBA (any law-related social work course) with approval by Carey Law School
• Master of Science in Social Policy students may use: MSSP 6310: Law & Social Policy with approval by Carey Law School
• Master of Science in Non-profit Leadership students may use: NPLD xxxx: TBD (any law-related NPL course) with approval by Carey Law School

The fourth course needed for the certificate is taken at the Law School and is in addition to the credits required for the master’s degree. Students should, after consulting their academic advisor, complete the fourth course for the Certificate in Law in the Spring semester (taking 6 CU instead of 5 CU) OR take the fourth course for the Certificate in Law during the summer. Students pay the SP2 per-course tuition rate and must take the course before graduating from the respective Master’s program.

Note: Taking a course during the summer may limit MSSP and NPL students’ internship options to the Philadelphia area. While both on-campus and online NPL students are eligible to complete the Certificate in Law, online students would need to attend at least one on-campus course to fulfill the certification requirements. Some law courses are offered in an online format.
