SUMMARY:The AI Shift: How Generative Technologies Are Transforming Daily Life\, Work\, and Education
DESCRIPTION:Our February speaker is Betty Chandy\, Director for Technology Integration and Learning at Catalyst at Penn Graduate School of Education (GSE). Learn more about the talk below and register at https://bit.ly/SPEAK26. See you online! 🖥️ \n  \nTalk Description: Artificial intelligence is woven into our daily lives – from the maps that guide us\, to the recommendations we see while shopping\, to the systems that quietly help us make decisions. This session will begin with a grounded introduction to what AI actually is\, followed by a look at traditional machine learning systems and the ways they’ve improved everyday experiences. From there\, Betty will explore the transformative moment marked by the launch of ChatGPT and the rapid rise of generative AI and other technologies reshaping how people study\, work\, and collaborate. Betty will close with an education‑focused lens on the benefits\, risks\, and emerging challenges of AI\, and what it all means for a sector committed to social impact. \n  \nWhat you can learn during this session \n\nUnderstand how AI systems (both traditional machine learning and newer generative models) shape everyday experiences\, from navigation and online shopping to workplace and learning environments.\nDifferentiate between traditional machine learning and generative AI\, gaining clarity on how the launch of tools like ChatGPT transformed how people study\, work\, create\, and solve problems.\nIdentify key opportunities and risks of AI in education and social impact contexts\, including implications for equity\, access\, creativity\, assessment\, privacy\, and responsible use.\n\nSpeaker’s Bio: Betty Chandy\, Ed.D. is the Director for Technology Integration and Learning Design at Catalyst @ Penn GSE\, where she leads work that connects learning sciences\, online instruction\, and emerging technologies to support educators and school systems. She oversees the Virtual Online Teaching (VOLT) certificate program and the Experiences in Applied Computational Thinking (EXACT) certificate program\, which prepare teachers to design meaningful and accessible learning experiences for diverse classrooms. \nDr. Chandy is the designer and director of Pioneering AI in School Systems (PASS)\, a professional development initiative that helps district and school leaders understand how AI can be used responsibly and effectively in K–12 education. PASS is supported through partnerships with regional districts and major philanthropic funding\, including a $1 million Google.org gift\, and is guiding schools as they establish strategies for AI adoption and governance.

SUMMARY:Making Secondary Data Work for You: Innovative Methods for Leveraging National Violent Death Data
DESCRIPTION:Secondary data offers powerful opportunities for research—but it also comes with constraints. How can scholars push beyond these limitations? Join experts Millan AbiNader\, PhD\, MSW\, Laurie Graham\, PhD\, MSW\, and Julie Kafka\, PhD\, MPH for a dynamic discussion on innovative methods for analyzing intimate partner violence-related fatalities using the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS).\nThey’ll share how they’ve used triangulation\, qualitative content analysis\, and natural language processing to uncover insights that traditional methods often miss—and how these strategies can be adapted to other understudied issues and populations. \nCo-sponsored by: Penn LDI\, Penn School of Social Policy & Practice & Penn Injury Science Center\nSupported by: Charles C. SUMMARY:Redesigning Philanthropy: Using Storytelling\, Empathy and Tech to Engineer Impact
DESCRIPTION:Our December speaker is Ruth Jean-Marie founder and CEO of the August Project and Consulting Group. Ruth will speak on the current and potential roles of storytelling\, virtual reality/tech\, and empathy to create substantive impact. We will engage the duality of storytelling as a source of empathy and as a tool for social impact\, wondering what sort of impact can be expected\, and the moral implications of this work. \nParticipants will couple the value of storytelling with contemporary approach to connection: virtual reality and technology\, exploring how collected stories strengthen intracultural connections and their value in philanthropy work. \nSpeaker Bio: Ruth Jean-Marie earned her Master’s of Science degree in Human Rights and International Law from New York University. She founded The August Project\, a non-profi t that leverages objective storytelling to do good\, better. Her opinions on the geopolitical relationship of Haiti and the rest of the world have been published in Ebony\, TravelNoire\, Blavity\, The Haitian Times\, America Hates Us and more. She is on the Forbes List Next 1000 Upstart Entrepreneurs and has been named an American Express Founder of Change. Most recently\, she completed the Global Social Impact House(GSIH) with Center for Social Impact Strategy (CSIS) at University of Pennsylvania. \nFrom co-creating a sneaker with Nike (that sold out!) to hosting workshops on how giving technically works\, The August Project’s goal is to create better do-gooders\, an archive of thoughtful narratives and more empowered people on the ground. The Brooklyn-born daughter of Haitian immigrants\, Jean-Marie says she wants to reframe how poverty is treated and looked upon.

SUMMARY:SP2 One Book Discussion - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt. Dr. Haidt investigates the nature of childhood\, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent\, thriving adults. He shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s\, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents mechanisms by which this “great rewiring of childhood” has interfered with children’s social and neurological development\, covering sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation\, addiction\, loneliness\, social contagion\, social comparison\, and perfectionism. Haidt describes steps that parents\, teachers\, schools\, tech companies\, and governments can take to end the epidemic of mental illness and restore a more humane childhood. \nSP2 will be hosting school-wide\, cross-program One Book discussions via Zoom and in person for all students\, faculty\, staff\, and alums. We are hopeful that these discussions will help build connections within SP2 and deepen our understanding of important social issues. Please register to attend one of the following group discussions by August 1\, 2025.
