Event Details
Join Sp2’s Community Teamworks at Words Beats & Life as we help support their annual Bum Rush the Boards event, the world’s first hip-hop chess tournament for youth ages 5-23. There are plenty of ways to volunteer, including registration, food preparation and service, chess arbiter, photographer/videographer, and clean-up. Space is limited and will be filled on a first come first serve basis, so make sure to register here. The event is taking place at the Columbia Heights Recreation Center, 1480 Girard Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009.
Bum Rush the Boards was created to combat exclusion, connect theory to practice, and inspire excellence. It is a celebratory common ground for chess, hip-hop culture, and S.T.E.M.A. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and the Arts). There is an often unseen connection between chess, hip-hop, and academics: the necessity of critical thinking. Whether it is hip-hop’s social critique, chess’s reliance on forethought, or academia’s need for analysis, all three help reinforce a culture of making connections, building skills, and planning for the future. By bringing these three together, Words Beats & Life has created a hip-hop festival that acts as a bridge by exposing youth to a culture (hip-hop), a set of strategies (chess), and a foundational knowledge (S.T.E.M.A.) that requires them to use judgment and foresight. These proficiencies are not only useful in chess, hip-hop, and S.T.E.M.A., but in business and life as well.
This service opportunity is part of the Future of Social Change Tour.
