Biography

Emily leads Penn Carey Law’s efforts to anchor and advance its public interest programs and scholarships, made possible by the Robert and Jane Toll Foundation’s historic $50 million gift – the largest gift of its kind to a law school. As steward of the country’s oldest and most expansive pro bono requirement, she ensures that PCL’s commitment to service remains an indelible and rigorous aspect of the school’s unique model of legal education. Emily maintains an unwavering belief in the power and importance of experiential learning as an essential means of inspiring and preparing students to use their law degrees, in any sector, to advance the public good.

A proud Penn alumna, Emily holds a PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology and master’s degrees in Nonprofit Leadership and Teaching, Learning, and Leadership. Emily teaches courses on systemic change, social theory, group dynamics, and values-driven leadership at Penn Carey Law, the School of Social Policy & Practice, and the Wharton School. She has served as a content-area expert on transformational and participatory learning methodologies for the American Bar Association’s Rule of Law Initiative and has led trainings for human rights attorneys and Supreme Court justices in Malaysia, Zambia, and Burkina Faso. Emily is co-founder of The Wynford Institute, which uses interactive, nontraditional learning methods to deliver socially impactful leadership and group dynamics programs in the United States, India, Nigeria, and Australia.

Emily serves on several nonprofit boards in Philadelphia and was a founding board member of the Youth Sentencing and Re-Entry Project (YSRP). Earlier in her career, she worked in refugee resettlement at the Nationalities Service Center, served as a nonprofit leadership consultant to Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s office, and spent three years as a private English teacher to members of the Al Saud and Al Sudairi royal families in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Emily and her husband live in New Jersey with their three children.
